NVIDIA Research: Small Language Models Are the Future of Agentic AI

NVIDIA Research has published a position paper advocating for small language models (SLMs) as the primary architecture for agentic AI systems. The research argues that SLMs are sufficiently powerful for most inference invocations while being inherently more economical and better suited than full-scale LLMs for repetitive, specialised agent subtasks. This represents a significant shift in thinking about how to build practical AI agents at scale.

For local and on-device inference practitioners, this aligns perfectly with real-world constraints: smaller models consume less memory, require lower computational resources, and can run with lower latency on edge hardware. The paper specifically identifies on-device inference and real-time performance as motivating scenarios, suggesting a heterogeneous approach where lightweight SLMs handle routine agent operations while larger models are reserved only for open-conversation tasks that genuinely require their capabilities.
